Variant: cross currents in culture

Variant is a free arts and culture magazine edited by Daniel Jewsbury (Belfast) and Leigh French (Glasgow). The magazine undertakes in depth coverage of the arts and culture in a broader social and political context.

The magazine publishes essays on critical cultural issues exploring the effects of neoliberalism on contemporary cultural politics. Subjects include: culture and immigration; political, social and cultural theory; cultural regeneration and arts funding; media, technology, and self organisation; law and economics.

The Variant archive including magazines, and cd-rom was presented in the reading area of the RISK exhibition alongside Feral Trade Coffee, and Small Urban Inventory.

Leigh French took part in the RISK Academy and introduced the group to The Tyranny of Structurelessness, which was hotly debated in relation to open source culture and collective working.

Variant is published 3 times a year and is archived online.
