Human Rights Memory Stick:
Prototype 1, 2005

The Human Rights Memory Stick (HRMS) was made for the RISK exhibition, exploring the relationship between high-risk political information and technology. The work has both a symbolic and archival function. The memory stick contains an unknown amount of data about human rights issues / abuses. New technologies can be used equally to enable or deny access to information, through legal or technical restrictions. The size of the stick bears no relation to the scale of the atrocities or the size of the file.Jota Castro has created the EMERGENCY FOUNDATION 2006, to use art as a medium to work on important social issues. He proposes to make hundreds of different models of the HRMS, each with a band-aid and information about Human Rights issues a different part of the world. The works would be sold, and the profits given to campaigns for improving Human Rights.
