Andy Hewitt and Mel Jordan (UK)Andy Hewitt and Mel Jordan created three works for the RISK exhibition.
'A Sculpture for RISK' positioned a reflective and provoactive statement in the social spaces of the CCA. The statement was created in response to the curatorial concept of the RISK exhibtion, and was designed as a beer mat for the CCA Cafe and bar. The proposition of the text reflected the ambition of many of the artists in RISK and was chosen to represent the project on the publicity material.
'The social function of public art is to subject us to civic behaviour', was designed as a poster in collaboration with students from the University of Wolverhampton. Copies of the work were placed on the Self Regulating Poster Wall (SRPW) pasting tables for visitors to paste up on the wall at their discretion.
'The economic function of public art is to increase the value of private property,' was reproduced as a hand painted sign directly onto the wall of the foyer, opposite the SRPW, and visible from Sauchiehall Street.
The text for 'The social function...' and 'The economic function...' are part of Hewitt and Jordan's poster series 'Three Functions' developed with Dave Beech. The aim of the work is to examine the tensions and contradictions that exist within public art practice; to explore how public art is integral to our culture and therefore how it functions in support of the dominant ideology.
